This is a lovely little book. When a friend recommended Sweet 15 by Emily Adler and Alex Echevarria, I at first I thought the plot would not hold me, but it was so cleverly crafted that I found myself really interested. As a teacher, I've always enjoyed YA fiction (being YA age X 4 myself ). As someone who likes to think of himself as a sophisticated adult reader, YA fiction, like Sweet 15, can be a quick snack gobbled up in one or two settings, yet provide enough depth to nourish a reader's appetite. Much like the "sweet 15" traditional quinceañera party Destiny "Dusty" is trying to negotiate, this book is full of some Spanish cultural history, surprises and fun. It's well-grounded in its New York City settings, and as someone not overly familiar with the city, the characters (and their devotion to sports teams and city trivia) made me feel as if I were eavesdropping at the cash register at Duane Read Drug Store. Like a perfectly executed meal, there's just the right balance of New York flavors transmitted through solid, sensory-enhancing prose. I love a book that transports me to a specific locale! All characters are well developed and fleshed out with just the right idiosyncrasies. You'll fall in love with Dusty, and find you wish you had an older sister like America "Merry," as opinionated and driven as she may be. Dusty's voice is so real that I Googled the authors to see if the book was actually written by a teenage girl. Even the time/chapter delineations are broken down in the spurts and bursts in which a fourteen-year-old's mind functions. Dusty's friends, from Omar to the entertaining Jezebels, are created with such a deft hand that you often feel there's an adult story lurking behind each one, or perhaps more YA fiction to come involving these likeable characters. The authors do a brilliant job of describing Dusty's precarious world, balanced between childhood and adulthood, a world that we all experienced - and survived - as children, whatever our cultural background.Product details

Puerto Rican New Yorker Destiny Lozada is more partial to her skateboard than a party dress, and she views neighbor Omar as a friend, not a potential date. Destiny's parents are determined to throw her a quinceañera, the mini-wedding style "coming out" party that marks the 15th birthday for many Hispanic girls. Destiny is horrified by the thought that her cash-strapped parents might spend $10,000 on the party, and her older sister, America, is opposed to the party for feminist reasons.
However, despite her initial reluctance to take part in the big Q, semi-tomboy Destiny finds herself flirting with a skater boy and texting with a secret admirer. Add in some mean-girl action at school, loving parents, plenty of humor, and some quinceañera push-back from America and "the Jezebels" and you get a fun, fast, multicultural read. I've lived in Texas for most of my adult life, and authors Adler and Echevarria do a nice job mixing English with occasional Spanish words or phrases to create believable conversations. The girls occasionally delve into high school subjects like who's hooking up and who's using protection, so I'll suggest this to readers in grades 8 and up. High school readers might also enjoy Judith Ortiz Cofer's IF I COULD FLY (also set in NYC.) Younger middle school readers might try THE SMELL OF OLD LADY PERFUME (great title, yes?) set in El Paso, Texas.

Destiny is turning 15 and her parents want to throw her a traditional Quinceañera. Her family wants it, she doesn't. She isn't like your typical girl and relates more to being a tomboy, not someone you'd expect to be overly excited about this type of event. After talking, her and her sister want to buck the trend of the traditional large party usually held for girls who turn 15. She'd rather have something more simple and low-key. After that, drama.
Not too short, not too long, nice length for a book, perfect for a young adult. It's about standing up for what you believe in. Also somewhat relatable, the certain issues that come up with her and her family throughout the book. It's interesting enough to get into even if you're not from the same background or have heard of the cultural customs originally. Good book for teens, especially teen girls age 12-16.
I seriously had a love affair with this book! Sweet 15 is a funny, real and tooth-achey sweet rendition that revamps and gives love to the Latino tradition of Quinceneras and the huge parties that come with them! I loved the character's authenticity and "keep it real and raw" attitudes!!! Their zest and passion for what they each believed in came through in the prose. Sweet 15 feels as though it is writeen by a teenager full of life and an inner city Latina at that- one that know who she is, where she is going, and what she wants....and then FAMILY gets thrown in making guilt and demands fly! IT IS REALISTIC AND LOVABLE! Check it out! I did and I was surprised that I enjoyed it as an adult and that my step-daughter (16 years old) loved it as much as I did!
